Hongkong Land Launches Central Cityscape Pilot Scheme Suite of Enhancements Includes Street Furniture, Greenery and Lighting

HONG KONG, 25th August 2003 -- Hongkong Land Limited today launched the Central Cityscape Pilot Scheme with an on-site tree planting ceremony, held outside Prince's Building, fronting Statue Square. The Pilot Scheme, part of a broad set of proposals to enhance the street level environment in Central, is scheduled for completion in three months and will feature stylish pavement treatments and finishes, street furniture, signage, greenery and improved lighting.

Hongkong Land's Chief Executive Nicholas Sallnow-Smith said at the ceremony, "Our initiative supports the Hong Kong Government's vision of Hong Kong as 'Asia's World City'. We hope this Pilot Scheme will promote further discussion and collaboration between Government and the business community with the aim of creating a visually pleasing world class cityscape that will improve the quality of life in Central."

Hongkong Land's Central Cityscape proposal complements the Government's work in upgrading the physical environment in Central. The Pilot Scheme, fully funded by Hongkong Land, is a result of two years of developmental work with full support from the Government. The Company hopes the creative and practical approach of the Scheme will encourage the adoption of the broader Central Cityscape proposal by the Government and the community.

Hongkong Land's Scheme was created after extensive research in world cities such as New York, London and Paris, and proposes the focusing of efforts on common features that were critical to the success of similar environmental schemes. These features include the introduction of stylish pavement treatments and finishes, street furniture, signage, greenery and improved lighting.

Mr. Sallnow-Smith and Mr. Raymond Chow, Hongkong Land's Executive Director for Commercial Property, Hong Kong, officiated the tree planting ceremony together with Guests of Honour Mrs. Betty Tung, Honourable Advisor of Green Fun, Ms Maria Tam, Chairman of Green Fun, Dr. Sarah Liao, JP, Secretary for the Environment, Transport and Works, Ms. Shelley Lee, JP, Permanent Secretary of Home Affairs Bureau, Mr. Wu Chor Nam, JP, Chairman of Central & Western District Council, Mr. Chan Tak Chor, MH, Vice Chairman of Central & Western District Council and Mr. Dominic C.H. Chan, Chairman of Central & Western District Council Green Sub-Committee.

The Pilot Scheme works will take place during the evening and during non-office hours to minimise any inconvenience to office workers, retail customers and pedestrians.

A display that illustrates the details of the Central Cityscape initiative will be staged at The Landmark West Bridge from 25th August to 5th September 2003.
